The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), in partnership with Ashok Leyland, has developed an advanced 600 horsepower (hp) engine that is set to undergo testing on the WhAP 8×8 (Wheeled Armoured Platform). Having successfully completed stringent laboratory testing, the engine is now prepared for real-world performance evaluation on the WhAP 8×8. This achievement marks a crucial advancement in India’s indigenous defence capabilities, focusing on homegrown technology for military vehicles.
The WhAP 8×8 is a highly adaptable, amphibious armoured vehicle co-developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and TATA Motors. This vehicle is specifically designed to fulfill the Indian Army's operational needs by providing robust mobility, firepower, and protection in various environments, from deserts to mountainous and riverine terrains.

Currently, the WhAP 8×8 is powered by a 600hp Cummins engine, which is produced domestically at Cummins' Pune facility. This engine gives the platform substantial off-road capability, ensuring optimal performance in challenging landscapes. However, the new engine developed by CVRDE and Ashok Leyland represents a pivotal step toward self-reliance in defence technology, reducing the need for foreign powertrain solutions and supporting the Make in India initiative.
The new engine is also anticipated to play a key role in the Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) program, which aims to create a next-generation family of Infantry Fighting Vehicles for the Indian Army. The FICV project is set to replace the ageing BMP series of armoured vehicles and will require a powerful, efficient, and reliable engine. The CVRDE-Ashok Leyland 600hp engine is expected to fulfill these criteria, offering the performance needed for superior mobility, speed, and endurance in combat scenarios. The FICV's mission will be to transport and safeguard infantry troops while delivering firepower using its onboard weapons systems, with the new engine providing the necessary support for heavy-duty battlefield operations.
