Royal Moroccan Army asks for TATA WhAP-based Tank Destroyer variant
During the recent Marrakech International Air Show, TATA Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) announced a landmark agreement with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces for the production of WhAP 8×8 armored vehicles. This significant defense contract strengthens the ties between India and Morocco, as TATA prepares to deliver over 400 versatile armored units, with more than 150 of these being the WhAP 8×8 model. Manufacturing will take place locally in Morocco, in collaboration with local industry, enhancing the nation’s defense production capabilities.
The Moroccan-specific WhAP 8×8 variant has been customized to meet the operational demands of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. Unlike the original Indian amphibious design, the Moroccan model will not retain amphibious features. This modification not only increases the vehicle's operational range but also allows for a more spacious and optimized troop transport compartment, enhancing comfort and capacity for personnel or additional equipment.
The armament for the Moroccan WhAP 8×8 will include advanced weaponry sourced from non-TATA suppliers. TASL has provided exclusive images showcasing the vehicle's enhanced weapons package, which features:
- Electronic Warfare and Jamming Systems: To counter contemporary battlefield threats, the vehicle will be equipped with electronic warfare systems capable of disrupting enemy communications and radar operations.
- 30mm Combat Turret: This high-powered turret will offer substantial firepower, effective for engaging light armored targets and ground threats.
- 12.7mm Remotely Controlled Machine Gun: A remote weapon station will boost defensive capabilities, allowing the crew to engage threats from within the safety of the armored vehicle.
- 105mm Tank Buster Gun: The inclusion of this anti-tank weapon gives the WhAP 8×8 significant firepower, enabling it to neutralize heavily armored targets at range.
- Anti-Tank and Anti-Personnel Missiles: Equipped with precision-guided munitions, the vehicle will feature missile systems capable of targeting both armored vehicles and enemy personnel.
This collaboration between TASL and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces marks a major advancement for Morocco's defense sector, aligning with the country’s goal of achieving greater self-sufficiency in military production. By locally manufacturing the WhAP 8×8, Morocco not only secures access to cutting-edge defense technology but also fosters local expertise and capabilities in armored vehicle manufacturing. The partnership further showcases India's dedication to enhancing defense relations with African nations, signaling opportunities for future exports of Indian military hardware.
