DRDO starts development of an indigenous 105mm Main Gun for Zorawar Light Tank
The Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a division under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has initiated the development of a new 105mm high-pressure (HP) barrel, a critical component for the Zorawar Light Tank. According to sources closely involved with the project, the gun's design phase has already been completed, and an industrial partner has been chosen to proceed with fabrication.
The 105mm HP gun development is part of India’s extensive effort to minimize reliance on foreign defense technologies by developing indigenous solutions. The ARDE-designed indigenous 105mm gun will replace the existing Cockerill 105mm main gun, a NATO-standard weapon currently installed on the Zorawar Light Tank prototypes.
Once fabrication is complete, the new indigenous 105mm barrel will undergo rigorous internal trials to validate its functionality and effectiveness. Following successful testing, the indigenous gun will be integrated into the Zorawar Light Tank prototype for comprehensive trials. These tests will focus on assessing the system's performance, accuracy, and reliability, ensuring it meets the Indian Army's demanding operational standards.
The Zorawar Light Tank program, initiated by DRDO, addresses the Indian Army’s need for a lightweight and highly maneuverable armoured vehicle suitable for high-altitude operations, such as those in Ladakh and other mountainous terrains. The initial prototypes of the Zorawar Light Tank were equipped with the Cockerill 105mm Gun, recognized for its powerful and reliable performance in various combat scenarios.
The addition of ARDE’s indigenous 105mm gun to the Zorawar Light Tank is set to provide the Indian Army with a dependable, agile, and effective combat platform, crucial for operations in challenging environments. This development is another significant stride in achieving self-reliance in the defense sector, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
