The
substantial submarine manufacturing capabilities of Mazagaon Dockyard Limited are
set to become idle after the sixth and the last Scorpene (Kalvari class)
submarine will be launched next week, thus bringing an end to the Indian Navy's
Project-75.
Highly skilled workforce that have been specially trained to work on pressure hulls is likely to be moved to other warship projects that the shipyard has bagged as plans to manufacture six Project-75I Next Generation Submarines have hit delays.
Mazagaon Dockyard Limited has a capacity to construct 11 submarines at any given time and its submarine division has two dedicated parallel submarine assembly lines fully ready for operations.
Mazagaon Dockyard had given an offer to the Navy to construct three additional Scorpene-class submarines with their independent propulsion system upgraded sensors and weapons, and officials have said that the plan could now be revived.
