In a very
significant development, Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL) has issued an Expression of
Interest (EOI) for collaboration from global firms in the design, development
and construction of Extra-Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (XLUUV) that will
have similar dimensions of a submarine.
This Autonomous Unmanned Submarine (AUS) will feature a reconfigurable payload bay that will be capable of payload delivery like torpedoes and Submarine Launched Cruise Missiles (SLCM) and the unmanned submarine will have extended range and autonomy.

It will transit to an area of operation loiter with the ability to periodically establish communications, deploy payloads and will carry different pre-programmed mission objectives and will travel back to home base.
A critical benefit is that the Indian Navy personnel can launch recover, operate and communicate with the unmanned submarine from the home base and the remote crew will never be placed in harm's way.
