Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI), a Hyderabad-based Miniratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), has reached a major milestone by shipping its first batch of titanium and superalloy products to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). These high-performance materials are essential for constructing the airframe and structural components of the Tejas Mk2 fighter jet, an upgraded version of India’s indigenous light combat aircraft.
The development and manufacturing of these titanium and superalloy products were carried out in collaboration with the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA). These agencies played a critical role in ensuring the materials met the stringent quality and technical requirements necessary for aerospace applications.
The incorporation of titanium alloys in the Tejas MkII airframe enhances its strength while reducing weight and providing excellent corrosion resistance. These qualities are vital for a supersonic combat aircraft. Meanwhile, superalloys, known for their ability to maintain strength under extreme stress and temperatures, will further reinforce the jet's structural integrity and longevity.
The Tejas Mk2 represents a significant advancement over the original Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). It features upgraded avionics, extended range, and increased payload capacity. Powered by the more robust GE F414 engine, the Mk2 bridges the gap between the LCA Mk1 and medium-weight fighter jets, solidifying its role as a key asset for the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the years to come.
The titanium airframe components provided by MIDHANI are central to the Mk2’s innovative design, ensuring the aircraft remains agile and capable of enduring the demands of high-speed maneuvers. The Tejas Mk2 prototype is slated for rollout by late 2025, with flight testing to commence shortly thereafter.
MIDHANI has long been a trusted supplier of specialized materials for India’s defense and aerospace industries. Its expertise in producing high-performance alloys and advanced materials has positioned it as a vital partner for flagship projects like the Tejas Mk2, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), and other indigenous defense initiatives.
As the Tejas Mk2 project gathers pace, MIDHANI’s contribution to providing top-quality materials will remain indispensable. With HAL preparing for the prototype’s rollout in 2025, the collaboration between defense PSUs like MIDHANI and other agencies ensures the timely availability of critical components, driving the success of this indigenous aerospace program.
