The Indian Air Force (IAF) is actively considering the introduction of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to fulfill its deep penetration strike missions, as confirmed by an unnamed IAF official speaking to sources. This transition is planned to coincide with the gradual retirement of the IAF’s Jaguar fleet, which is set to begin phasing out in 2028 and be fully decommissioned by 2035.

The Jaguar, renowned for its supersonic low-level flight and radar-evading capabilities, has been integral to the IAF’s deep strike operations. Pilots of these aircraft are trained to execute complex missions targeting strategic enemy infrastructure deep within hostile territory.

Despite its proven effectiveness, the IAF is now moving beyond traditional manned aircraft in pursuit of more advanced capabilities. According to the official, the IAF is currently assessing two potential programs aimed at developing an Unmanned Deep Penetration Strike Platform (UDPSP). Ongoing discussions are centered around the platform's technical specifications, particularly focusing on combining stealth, cost-efficiency, and a considerable payload capacity.

The envisioned UDPSP would need to penetrate far into enemy territory, deliver a substantial payload to disable critical military targets, and remain undetected by sophisticated enemy radar systems. The emphasis on stealth and payload capacity suggests that the IAF is seeking to develop a highly capable, long-range UAV tailor-made for intricate strike missions.

This strategic development mirrors the global shift towards unmanned combat systems. UAVs offer distinct advantages over their manned counterparts, including lower operational costs, eliminating risks to pilot safety, and the ability to carry out missions in high-risk environments.
