DRDO to Develop New 1,500 km Long-Range Stand-Off Weapon for Su-30 MKI, Potentially Named RudraM-IV
In March 2023, the Indian Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) granted the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for an indigenously developed Long-Range Stand-Off Weapon (LRSOW) designed to be integrated with the Su-30 MKI aircraft. This approval marks a pivotal advancement in India's pursuit of self-reliance in the creation of sophisticated weapon systems.
Initial reports indicated that the LRSOW would be an air-launched cruise missile with subsonic speed and a range between 1,000 to 1,500 kilometres. However, recent updates suggest that this new weapon will be part of the RudraM family of air-to-surface missiles, which is currently being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
In March 2023, the DAC cleared IAF's proposal for an indigenously design, developed and manufactured Long Range Standoff Weapon (LRSOW) to be integrated on the Su-30MKI.

The existing RudraM series includes the RudraM-I, RudraM-II and IIA, as well as the RudraM-III, which is still under development. The RudraM-III, with a range of 550 kilometres, is already a powerful weapon capable of hitting targets deep within enemy territory. The upcoming LRSOW, likely to be called RudraM-IV, is expected to surpass this range, offering the Su-30 MKI even greater strike capabilities.
This project is a clear demonstration of India’s growing expertise in advanced missile system design. Once integrated into the Su-30 MKI fleet, the LRSOW will give the Indian Air Force an extended-range air-to-surface attack capability, significantly boosting both offensive power and deterrence.
The expansion of the RudraM missile family further underscores India’s dedication to indigenous defence development. By building on the established RudraM platform, the development of the LRSOW can be expedited, utilizing existing expertise and resources.
The LRSOW’s eventual deployment will be a crucial addition to the Indian Air Force’s arsenal, providing the capability to engage high-value targets at extended distances, and reinforcing India’s national security.
