The DRDO is
working on the development of the Directionally Unrestricted Ray-Gun Array
(DURGA) Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) and it might soon begin the laboratory
testing phase of the 100-plus kilowatt weapon that will be most effective
against short-range threats such as rockets, mortars, drones, and anti-tank missiles.
The laser-based air defense system will not replace existing short-range air defense systems but will supplement and complement them and will target smaller projectiles and leave the larger ones for the missile-based air defense batteries.
The DURGA-II DEW will take around 2 years to fully materialize and bring it to near production specification.
