India has started work to develop the country's first
generation SSNs and third generation SSBNs and both Russia
and France are in an intense
competition to grab lucrative contracts for India's multi-billion dollar
nuclear submarine programs.
France has offered its non-nuclear equipment for Indian
Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarine (SSN) program such as Next Generation Pumpjet
Propulsion system as well as navigation and other communication sensors.
Russia is also keen to get more work to develop Next Generation
Pressurized Water Nuclear Reactors for both the SSN and SSBN programs.
In both case, it is India
which is likely to gain heavily as both Russian nuclear reactor for nuclear
submarines, and French pumpjet propulsion and other sensors for nuclear attack
submarines are technologically very advanced ones and India need technologies
of both to make its own stealthy Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN)
and Nuclear Attack Submarines (SSN) which will be among world’s best such
vessels.
