The Indian Government
has placed the order for serial production of the two Interceptor missiles of Ballistic
Missile Defense (BMD) Phase-1 to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) that includes Prithvi
Air Defense (PAD) missile for High Altitude interception and the Advanced Air Defense
(AAD) missile for Lower altitude interception that will intercept any incoming
enemy ballistic missile launched from 5,000 kilometers away.

India has already deployed Multi-Function Fire Control radars and Long-Range Tracking Radars at multiple sites and it is expected that the Phase-1 of BMD shield will go operational from 2023.

Phase-2 of the BMD is under development, in which two more advanced interceptor missiles will be developed named as AD-1 and AD-2 where AD stands for ‘Air Defense’. These two interceptor missiles will be based on American SM-3 BMD interceptors and will be deployed on future large Next Generation Destroyers of the Indian Navy for Ballistic Missiles interception from sea.
