The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing a Mini Electronic Warfare (EW) system for UAVs and this lightweight Mini EW system will comprise both Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) and Communications Intelligence (COMINT) segments that will be integrated on a tethered drone for enhancing EW surveillance capability on board warships and will provide early detection capabilities with enhanced range.
Tethered vs Untethered Drones
Drones can be free-flying platforms or tethered. A tethered drone has a cable that connects it to a base station on the ground. There are pros and cons to using both untethered and tethered drones. Advantages to using tethered drones, in general, are significant in many use cases. Common limitations of untethered drones include limited flight times, increased safety risk, antenna interference, and the need for a trained pilot. Unlimited autonomy is the first critical benefit of tethered drones.
