In response to former vice president of India Hamid Ansari’s remarks at an event organised by the Indian American Muslim Council, DisinfoLab released a series of tweets alleging that the IAMC was once trying to get India blacklisted by the United States.

“Former VP Ansari & Actor Swara Bhaskar participating in an event by IAMC to ‘save pluralism’ on #RepublicDay They may not know: IAMC paid money to get India black-list by the US is linked with Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) & Linked with the fraud in name of Covid crisis,” tweeted DisinfoLab.

Those who are not familiar with DisInfo Lab, it is, in its own words, “a separate legal entity with the motive of unveiling fake news and propaganda that intend to create turmoil among people”.

Meanwhile, IAMC introduces itself as the largest Washington-based advocacy organisation of Indian American Muslims, with chapters across the US.

While attending the Indian American Muslim Council program held on India’s Republic Day, Ansari had on Wednesday said, “In recent years, we have experienced the emergence of trends and practices that dispute the well-established principle of civic nationalism and interpose a new and imaginary practice of cultural nationalism.”

He had further said: “It seeks to present an electoral majority in the guise of a religious majority and monopolised political power. It wants to distinguish citizens on the basis of their faith, give vent to intolerance, insinuate otherness, and promote disquiet and insecurity.”

“Some of its recent manifestations are chilling and reflect poorly on our claim to be governed by rule of law. It’s a question that has to be answered. These trends need to be contested and contested legally and contested politically,” added Ansari.

Now, DisInfo Lab claims that Shaik Ubaid, the founder of IAMC, collected money in the name of Rohingyas and paid a lobbying firm, FGR, to get India blacklisted by USCIRF (US Commission on International Religious Freedom). FGR head Terry Allen is also a long-time associate of USCIRF chair Nadine Maenza, “who is also ‘saving pluralism’ in India”, tweeted Disinfo Lab.

Another tweet stated that IAMC claims to represent Indian Muslims in the United States. The group says it is fighting against the ‘current fascist government’. But why did it lobby against India in 2013?, asked Disinfo Lab.

IAMC’s Shaik Ubaid along with his buddy Abdul Malik Mujahid founded Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), a US front for Jamat-e-Islami, Pakistan, claimed Disinfo Lab, adding that there are known links between ICNA and terror groups based in Pakistan, such as LeT.

Another tweet read that Rasheed Ahmed, who served as Executive Director of another shady front – Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA) (2008-17), heads the IAMC. During the height of the COVID-19 crisis in India, IMANA collected funds under the guise of helping the country and ripped the money off, claimed the tweet.

Next tweet pointed out that Zahid Mahmood, formerly in the Pakistan Navy, is the director of operations at IMANA. In addition, IMANA is also associated with the Muslim Brotherhood front in the US, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA).

To understand their ideology, IAMC members like Kaleem Kawaja have been vocal Taliban supporters, tweeted Disinfo Lab.

It further said that last year, UAPA [Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act] was imposed on IAMC for spreading false news to incite communal violence and reinforce the narrative of minority plight in India – including fabrications about CAA [Citizenship (Amendment) Act] and violence in Tripura.

Disinfo Lab said that their concern is that multiple organisations have exposed IAMC not once, not twice, but multiple times. However, it seems that not all people have heard of their truth, read the tweet. It further urged people to spread the thread.
