Other than the currently progressing works to develop 3,323-km roads all along the border with China, the Ministry of Defense is evaluating an extra 104 roads of around 6,700 km along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the states of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
The currently underway road projects, called as the India-China Border Roads (ICBRs), have been designated as 'strategically vital'. The road connectivity has been accomplished on 59 roads having an all-out length of 3,205.16 km. On the leftover two roads, have an absolute length of 118.41 km, the incomplete segment is around 29 km.
The Lok Sabha was briefed in a composed manner on Wednesday that other than the ICBRs, another 104 roads are being proposed to be worked along the India-China border by the BRO.
Steps have been taken to speed up these activities. The Ministry of Defense has set up a committee to determine the issues relating to postponements and delays in the project faced by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are part of this newly set up committee.
Troublesome landscape, restricted working season, trouble in getting construction material, delay in timberland/natural life clearance and difficulties in obtaining lands are the primary issues that lead to delays in the development of roads in these areas. The newly set up experts committee will attempt to figure out and solve these issues.
