The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is making noteworthy progress in developing Multiple Kill Vehicles (MKVs), a cutting-edge defensive system aimed at neutralizing the growing threat posed by Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs). This breakthrough technology marks a critical enhancement of India’s ballistic missile defense architecture, designed to counter increasingly advanced and complex missile attacks.

The MKV system is built around a carrier platform equipped with a high-resolution telescope, capable of deploying and guiding several small, streamlined kill vehicles (KVs). These KVs are engineered to autonomously perform terminal-phase interceptions of incoming threats. Launched via ground-based interceptors, each interceptor carries multiple KVs, supporting a layered and redundant defense strategy.

This innovative setup significantly improves the system’s ability to identify and destroy multiple warheads or decoys launched by MIRV-equipped missiles. It also enables high-precision targeting, which is essential in countering modern missile technologies that deploy multiple reentry vehicles to confuse or overwhelm defenses.
