The 'steel cutting' ceremony for the first ship of the Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) class of the Indian Navy was held at Cochin Shipyard on Monday. This ceremony marks the official commencement of the ship's construction.

Cochin Shipyard Limited secured the contract for the construction of six NGMVs in March 2023.

These advanced vessels, set to be inducted into the Indian Navy from 2027 onwards, will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors. This will greatly enhance the Navy's combat capabilities and ensure its preparedness for future challenges.

"The construction of the ships reinforces India’s commitment to build a strong and modern Navy, capable of operating in the complex maritime environment of the Indian Ocean Region," the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The ships are designed as high-speed vessels, equipped with a powerful array of weapons and sensors, including a Surface-to-Surface Missile System, Anti-Missile Defence Systems, Air Surveillance, and Fire Control Radars.

All key equipment central to the vessel's operations has been indigenously developed and manufactured, highlighting the nation's technological prowess and aligning with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the ministry stated.
