Embraer has proposed an innovative solution to the Indian Air Force (IAF) for its Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) tender, offering an armed variant of the C-390 Millennium. The tender involves acquiring 60 medium transport aircraft, and Embraer introduces a versatile version of the C-390 equipped with hardpoints under its wings, enabling it to carry advanced air-to-surface weapon systems. This enhanced capability would allow the aircraft to take on anti-land and anti-ship operations, transforming it into a true multi-role platform that goes beyond its traditional transport role.
The C-390 Millennium, in its armed configuration, can be fitted with multiple hardpoints beneath each wing. These hardpoints are designed to carry heavy stand-off weapons, including India’s indigenous Rudram-II air-to-surface missile, which weighs approximately 800 kilograms. The addition of such advanced weapon systems would provide the C-390 with significant strike capabilities, enhancing its operational utility for the IAF.
In addition to land-based strike missions, the armed C-390 Millennium could play a critical role in maritime security operations. The aircraft is capable of carrying NASM-MR (Medium Range Naval Anti-Ship Missiles), making it suitable for anti-ship missions for the Indian Navy. With this feature, the C-390M could effectively support maritime patrols and provide precision strike capabilities against naval targets.
Embraer is also exploring the option of transforming the C-390 Millennium into a mothership for air-launched drones, aligning with evolving trends in modern aerial warfare. This advanced feature would enable the aircraft to launch and manage drone swarms or autonomous UAVs, which could be used for surveillance, tactical strikes, and other combat roles. Such a capability positions the C-390M as a cutting-edge force multiplier that combines transport, combat, and drone deployment functionalities.
By introducing missile carrying capability and drone-launching abilities, the C-390 Millennium offers a cost-effective multi-role solution to the IAF. This dual-purpose platform could streamline operational costs while simultaneously expanding the Air Force’s capability for missions such as precision strikes, tactical transport, maritime security, and UAV-based operations. The versatility of the C-390M makes it an attractive option to meet both current and future operational requirements of the IAF.
The competition for the IAF’s Medium Transport Aircraft program is intense, with global contenders like Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Super Hercules and Airbus’ A400M Atlas also vying for the contract. However, Embraer’s decision to offer a weaponized and drone-capable variant of the C-390 Millennium gives it a distinct edge. This unique approach positions the aircraft as more than just a transport solution, delivering enhanced combat capabilities and operational flexibility that could prove decisive in the IAF’s final evaluation.
