India’s Airbus A319 based Netra Mk2 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system configuration seems to have gone through revision. In the latest tender document issued by the DRDO more visible structural changes to the aircraft seems to be much more radical than what was originally planned.
Changes visible are that the beyond-line-of-sight datalinks, satellite communication systems radome have been moved behind and now it is close to the tail section and it seems plans to have multimode airborne Maritime surveillance Radar to act as an effective force-multiplier solution for operational missions in the maritime theater seems to have been dropped.
New Revised Configuration |
New radome incorporated in the top forward section in the revised configuration seems to suggest that plans to replace weather radar located in the nose cone of the aircraft with a derivate of the Uttam AESA might have been dropped and instead, now it will be on the top radome that seems to suggest that Radar antenna size now will be much bigger than originally planned if true will have more forward tracking and search range.
Another latest addition seems to be a forward-looking infrared search and track (IRST) system that can be seen in the lower Mid Forward Fuselage Section. while it is still not clear whether it will be an IRST system or a much more advanced Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) type system but due to the sapphire window-like design seen in the design it might be EOTS system that is in work for the AMCA Program.
