Ramjet Propelled Artillery shell to extend range of ATAGS

The proposal worth 8,000 crore rupees for the purchase of 307 ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System) howitzers will be cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by PM Narendra Modi by the end of this Month, which will see the manufacturing of ATAGS by two private sector firms Bharat Forge Kalyani group and TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).

The DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) along with IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur are jointly working on redesigning an existing 155 millimeters shell using ‘Ramjet Propulsion’ that will be compatible with ATAGS and will have a range of over 60 kilometers.

This ramjet powered 155mm shell will use a precision guidance kit for trajectory correction and once ready it will be manufactured by Munitions India Limited.
