The Indian Navy's
30-year plan for Submarine building was approved by the Government in July 1999
and under the Phase-1 of the plan, commissioning of 6 submarines under the Project-75
and 6 submarines under the Project-75I was planned and another 12 indigenously designed
conventional submarines under the Project-76 were due to be commissioned between
2012 and 2030.
As for latest reports, the 30 year plan has been updated to meet current strategic and tactical objectives and the new amendment to Phase-II of the 30-year submarine building plan is that, now the number of advanced conventional submarines of indigenous design under the Project-76 has been reduced from 12 to 6 submarines, followed with the construction of 6 indigenous SSN Nuclear-Powered Attack submarines (Project-75 Alpha).
There are reports that the 6 indigenous SSN project is expected to materialize before the 6 indigenous advanced conventional submarines under Project-76.
