HAL IMRH and HAL AMCA

R Madhavan, Chairman and Managing Director at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has confirmed that the 5th generation Advanced Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) program will be executed under the special purpose vehicle (SPV) model involving private players, where the newly formed companies will have a majority ownership stake by Private sector companies with HAL having a minority stake in this companies.

Madhavan also said that before these new companies are formed, minimum order commitment will be agreed upon with users (armed forces) so that the private sector companies involved are well aware of their investment returns before the execution of the projects.

DRDO and HAL are in talks with 4-5 major private sector companies for the formation of a consortium that could jointly pool their expertise and resources in executing these projects backed by hundreds of MSMEs as Tier-II suppliers for the program. Coimbatore defense industrial corridor has been selected for the setting up of a new production line for the AMCA when it enters production in 2028.

idrw.org has been told that the IAF has agreed to place orders for 2 Squadrons of AMCA Mk1 and 5 Squadrons of AMCA Mk2 with scope for orders for more than 3 Squadrons. The combined IMRH requirement agreed by Army, Air Force, and Navy will be around 400 helicopters to replace older Mi-8 and Mi-17-1 Type Helicopters supplied by the then Soviet Union with 100 more likely to be built for export and civilian market.
