75 Years of Independence: India to kick start 5 big-ticket Defence projects in 2022

On the 75th anniversary of the Independence of India, several big-ticket Defence projects are to be announced as part of the celebrations and to showcase the growing defense sector in India. These major big-ticket Defence projects in the country will not only further boost India’s security in the region but also propel into the club of a handful of countries that has such technologies at their disposal. India hopes that these projects act as a reliable exporter of the defense equipment that has seen steady growth in the last 7 years with a major chunk of contribution now coming from the Private sector that last year contributed 21% in export share.
Some of the big-ticket Defence projects that might be cleared that have been confirmed to idrw.org are listed below are to be cleared by CCS in 2022.
AMCA: India’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will clear ADA/IAF proposed indigenous military aviation project to build a fifth-generation jet in the country for which it has sought 15000 crores. The formal announcement by March next year will kick start Phase-I of the program will see the rollout of Two Next-Gen Technological demonstrators for the program by 2024-26.
AMCA Engine: GTRE will likely conclude talks and announce a partnership for the development of a powerful 110 Kilonewton afterburning turbofan engine for the more potent AMCA MkII jets that enters production in 2035. Formal Talks with French Safran and UK’s Rolls-Royce by a team made up of GTRE, HAL, and Private sector company officials have been concluded including the technical collaboration level of talks and it is expected program will officially be sanctioned by mid of next year.
High Altitude Pseudo-Satellite (HAPS): Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) proposed indigenous High Altitude Pseudo-Satellite (HAPS) that can be used for telecommunication and remote sensing sectors catering to both defense, as well as civilian purposes, will be cleared for which HAL has asked for 700 crores. India’s first stratospheric UAS of its kind will be able to provide real-time data.
IMRH: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) plans to indigenously design and develop a medium-lift helicopter, the Indian multirole helicopter (IMRH) will likely be cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for project sanction. HAL finally was able to get the Navy onboard and Army and Air force already have given their Preliminary Services Qualitative Requirements (PSQR) and HAL will be submitting a Detailed project report (DPR) before it approaches CCS. HAL will be asking 10000 crores for the program under which it plans to initially use the engine of foreign origin but also build high power helicopter engines for the program at a later stage. The first flight likely will take place in 2029 and enter production in 2033. The helicopter is planned as a replacement for the Mi-17 helicopter fleet of the Indian Defence Services that are due for retirement from 2028 onwards.
Hypersonic Cruise Missiles: Under Project ” Vishnu ” India plans to develop Two long-range Hypersonic cruise missiles that will have some of the technologies that are currently being validated by DRDO on its Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV). DRDO plans fresh trials in 2022 of the HSTDV that will pay way to the development of Two Hypersonic cruise missiles that are likely to get official sanction in 2022. Surface to Surface Hypersonic cruise missile with a range of 2500km will be developed based on the HSTDV tech and will enter service by 2024-25, In the second Phase, much more compact and a smaller Air launched Hypersonic cruise missile will be developed for launches from fighter jets with a range of 700km+.
