TATA explores local manufacturing of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G Engines for Airbus C-295M Aircraft
The TATA Group has marked a significant advancement in India's aerospace manufacturing sector with the commencement of production for the C-295M transport aircraft within the country. This achievement not only bolsters India’s domestic defense manufacturing capabilities but also enhances its status as an emerging global aerospace industry player.
As part of a further boost to the 'Make in India' initiative, TATA Group is evaluating the possibility of producing the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines locally. These engines, which are rated at 1,972 kW (2,644 hp), are essential for the high performance of the C-295M transport aircraft.
Currently, the PW127G engines are imported in their entirety. However, ongoing discussions focus on setting up facilities for local production, including manufacturing key engine components and assembling engines from kits within India. This move is strategic, aiming to minimize reliance on imports, foster new employment opportunities, and contribute to economic development.

This move will also create an ecosystem of small, medium and micro enterprises that can take on manufacturing such critical aerospace engine, whose technologies are crucial and highly secretive, as engines are back-bones of any country's indigenous aerospace industry. By producing these highly advanced engines locally, TATA Group along with its small scale suppliers will gain a significant experience in manufacturing such engines in India, which may ultimately benefit Indian Aerospace Industry in the long run to manufacture indigenous engines in near future.
The indigenization of the C-295M and its engine production marks a major milestone for India's aerospace industry. It reflects the country’s increasing technical expertise and its capability to manage complex manufacturing projects. With continued investments in defense and aerospace, efforts like these are pivotal in pushing India towards greater self-reliance and enhancing national strategic strength.
