On Tuesday evening, two U.S. Navy destroyers successfully intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at Israel, assisting Tel Aviv in defending against a major attack from Tehran. The U.S. Navy fired a dozen interceptors to stop the barrage of around 180 missiles, nearly double the amount Iran launched during a previous unprecedented strike in April, according to Pentagon officials.

Unlike the April attack, this latest strike involved no drones, and the damage on the ground in Israel was minimal, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated. "You don’t launch that many missiles without intending to hit something. Just like the last time, Iran's aim was to cause destruction," Ryder said. "Thankfully, Israel's air defense systems, along with U.S. support, were able to prevent significant damage."

During the attack, U.S. Navy guided missile destroyers USS Bulkeley (DDG-84) and USS Cole (DDG-67) played a crucial role, firing a dozen interceptors alongside Israeli defenses. According to sources on the ground and within the U.S. Navy, the destroyers likely deployed RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) interceptors, guided by the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. However, this has not been officially confirmed by U.S. authorities.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan condemned the Iranian missile strike, stating that the U.S. and Israel will work together to impose "severe consequences" for the attack. Sullivan emphasized the gravity of the situation, saying, "This is a significant escalation by Iran. It is equally significant that we, alongside Israel, were able to prevent casualties in this attack on Israel."

The missile strike occurred as Israel launched a ground offensive against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, following the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. Israel has communicated that its offensive will be "limited" and aimed at dismantling Hezbollah facilities near the border, which are used to stage attacks into Israel, according to Ryder.

Hezbollah's rocket fire has already displaced 63,000 Israeli citizens, while nearly a million Lebanese civilians have fled from Israeli strikes, as reported by the United Nations. The U.S. is actively engaging with Israel to ensure there is clarity on the mission’s scope and to avoid escalation in the broader regional conflict, Ryder added.

Israeli media reported that in response to the Iranian missile attack, the Israeli military is preparing for "powerful strikes" on strategic targets across the Middle East.
