Brazil, currently operating a fleet of over 40 F-5 and 20 AMX aircraft, is contemplating a strategic transition towards a dual-type fighter and strike aircraft fleet in the future. Motivated by budgetary constraints, the nation is evaluating options beyond a complete overhaul of its fleet with the Gripen-E.
In a promising development, Brazil and India could establish a strategic partnership that benefits both nations. Embraer, a leading Brazilian aerospace firm, might negotiate to set up a C-390 assembly line in India. This initiative would not only enhance India's aerospace capabilities but also provide Brazil with a cost-effective avenue for acquiring advanced surveillance aircraft.
At the same time, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) could consider supplying Tejas Mk1A fighter jets to Brazil. With Brazil's existing knowledge of the Gripen platform, based on the Saab JAS-39 Gripen, HAL’s Tejas Mk1A—another light combat aircraft—could serve as a practical option for Brazil.
Such a partnership would yield multiple advantages for both countries. For Brazil, it would diversify its aircraft inventory, decreasing reliance on a single platform and improving operational flexibility. For India, it would open new export markets for the Tejas Mk1A, solidifying its status as a competitive player in the global aerospace industry.
Although establishing a C-390 assembly plant in India would necessitate considerable negotiations and investments, the potential rewards of such a collaboration may outweigh the challenges. By leveraging their combined strengths and expertise, Brazil and India could forge a mutually advantageous relationship that enhances their defense capabilities and fosters economic growth.
