Russian Navy’s New Kilo-class submarine RFS Ufa visits Kochi, boosting maritime ties with India
The Russian Navy’s Kilo-class submarine, RFS Ufa, has arrived at the southern Indian port of Kochi, accompanied by the rescue boat Alatau. This visit aims to strengthen ties between the Russian and Indian navies, featuring meetings with India’s Southern Naval Command, sports events, and resupply operations.
RFS Ufa belongs to the Project 636.3 series, commonly known as the improved Kilo-class submarines. It is the fourth submarine in the series constructed for Russia’s Pacific Fleet, with its launch in November 2019 overseen by Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Nikolai Evmenov. The Ufa officially joined the Russian Navy in 2022.
The Indian Navy extended a warm reception to the submarine and its accompanying vessel, the Alatau, as part of a scheduled visit from the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet.

This visit highlights the growing maritime cooperation between India and Russia. PRO Defence Kochi shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) to commemorate the arrival, stating, "Russian submarine #Ufa docks at #Kochi, met with a warm welcome by the #IndianNavy." The post also emphasized the strong bond between the two nations, adding, "A symbol of the unshakable friendship between India and Russia, maritime cooperation continues to sail strong."
The Project 636.3 submarines are recognized for their enhanced combat power compared to previous models. They feature superior acoustic stealth, greater target acquisition range, the latest inertial navigation system, an advanced automatic control system, and powerful high-speed torpedo and missile weaponry. These characteristics make them a leading choice in non-nuclear submarine technology.
The visit of RFS Ufa to Kochi not only reinforces India-Russia naval cooperation but also provides an opportunity for both nations to exchange knowledge and expertise in submarine operations. This growing partnership in the maritime sector continues to deepen the strategic ties between the two countries.
