The Civil Aviation Minister, K Rammohan Naidu, is set to bring a pivotal proposal before the Finance Ministry to kickstart India’s ambitious Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) program. This initiative involves developing a 90-seat turboprop aircraft aimed at strengthening India's aviation manufacturing sector and decreasing its reliance on foreign aircraft suppliers. Spearheaded by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), the project has gained interest from several private aerospace companies within India.


The RTA project has strong backing from HAL and NAL, two of India’s premier aerospace organizations. NAL has requested around $2 billion in development funds to produce pre-production aircraft for comprehensive flight testing. These test units will be critical for certification of the new model, clearing the way for commercial production.


Minister Naidu’s proposal is expected to be a pivotal moment for securing government approval and funding for the RTA program, especially as it approaches critical milestones like the completion of the critical design review (CDR). This 90-seat turboprop is intended to meet the rising demand for regional travel, particularly in underserved areas across India.


The proposal has attracted interest from numerous private aerospace firms with experience in producing fuselage components for major global players like Airbus and Boeing. This participation is vital, as it demonstrates the increasing capabilities of India’s aerospace manufacturing sector. Collaboration with private companies is expected to fast-track the RTA’s development, boost innovation, and make the aircraft competitive internationally.


India’s regional aviation market is expanding quickly, with growing demand for cost-efficient, short-haul aircraft. Presently, Indian regional airlines mainly rely on imported turboprops like the ATR series. The RTA aims to fill this gap with a domestically developed aircraft, reducing dependence on imports and providing a solution tailored to India’s specific regional requirements.


With its 90-seat capacity, the RTA is targeted at short-haul routes connecting smaller cities, which larger jets often bypass. Designed to perform well on shorter runways and in underdeveloped airports, the aircraft aligns with the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, making air travel more accessible to regional and remote areas.


Beyond fulfilling domestic needs, the RTA project is strategically significant for India’s broader aerospace aspirations. A successful RTA program would place India among a select group of nations capable of developing and manufacturing commercial aircraft, reducing dependency on manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus.


The global market for turboprop aircraft is also expected to grow, creating a potential export market for the RTA. This success would allow India to position itself as a competitor in the international aerospace arena. Indian aerospace companies are increasingly recognized for their engineering capabilities, and the RTA could be a significant step toward establishing India as a leader in global aviation manufacturing.
