Indian Defence Experts urge Ministry of Defence to prefer Tata WhAP over Canada-made Stryker Vehicle amidst Canada's Anti-India stance on Khalistan issue
As diplomatic tensions between India and Canada escalate, Indian defence experts are urging the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to reconsider the acquisition of Canadian-made Stryker armoured vehicles. This recommendation comes in the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's perceived "anti-India rhetoric" and allegations that his government supports Khalistani separatist groups.
The Stryker, an eight-wheeled armoured vehicle originally developed for the U.S. Army, was under consideration for local production in India. However, experts warn that some of its components would still come from Canada, potentially benefiting its economy at a time when diplomatic relations between the two countries are strained. Many in India argue that maintaining defence cooperation with Canada sends the wrong signal in the current political environment.
"We cannot engage in defence deals with nations that provide shelter and support to Khalistani extremists," a leading Indian defence expert stated, echoing a growing national sentiment. The Canadian government’s perceived tolerance of anti-India groups, particularly those advocating for the creation of an independent Sikh state known as Khalistan, has become a significant sticking point in Indo-Canadian relations.
Defence analysts are instead pushing for the MoD to prioritize the Tata Motors' indigenously developed Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP). This 8x8 amphibious vehicle, created in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), offers capabilities on par with the Stryker but avoids the diplomatic complications associated with Canadian components.
The WhAP has already proven its capabilities, having recently secured a contract with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, further cementing its standing as a serious competitor in the global defence market.
The growing diplomatic rift between India and Canada stems from several issues, including Trudeau's management of domestic concerns within the Indian diaspora and his government's alleged inability to separate internal political issues from broader foreign policy.
This diplomatic strain could have broader repercussions, potentially affecting not only defence trade but also other areas of cooperation between the two nations. By selecting the locally produced WhAP, India can strengthen its strategic independence while sending a firm message about its stance on national security and sovereignty.
