Indian Army intends to purchase 1200 advanced towed gun systems (TGS)
The Indian Army is set to enhance its artillery capabilities by acquiring up to 1200 next-generation Towed Gun Systems (TGS), with an initial order of 400 units. This procurement marks a crucial move in modernizing India's artillery forces.
The TGS, designed to weigh around 15 tons, will feature several advanced upgrades to boost its performance and adaptability. Key enhancements include:
- Laser-Based Ignition: The system will employ laser-based ignition technology, which will improve firing reliability and accuracy.
- Software-Defined Radio (SDR): SDR will ensure secure and efficient communication, allowing the TGS to stay connected and function seamlessly across various operational settings.
- Hybrid Drive: A hybrid drive system will enable the TGS to quickly leave its firing position, enhancing its mobility and operational flexibility.
- Lithium-Ion Batteries: The TGS will be equipped with Lithium-ion batteries, enabling silent mode operation over short distances, which is ideal for covert missions.
Additionally, the TGS will feature a powerful global positioning system (GPS) and an inertial navigation-based sight system, ensuring precise location and orientation. This will significantly improve accuracy and operational effectiveness.
The fire-control system (FCS) will incorporate an optical sight, enabling effective indirect firing during both day and night. This ensures the system can function efficiently in all lighting conditions. Several private companies, such as Bharat Forge, Tata Defence, and L&T, are expected to participate in the procurement process, given their expertise in defense manufacturing.
The next-generation TGS will also have an expanded range of specialized ammunition, including Ramjet-propelled artillery shells. These advanced munitions will allow the system to strike targets at ranges between 80 to 100 kilometers, significantly enhancing its capacity to neutralize distant threats.
