The Indian Air Force (IAF) is taking steps to address a looming production gap between the Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 fighter jets. With the extended production of the Mk1A due to increased orders and a pressing need for quicker delivery of the advanced Mk2, the IAF has directed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to investigate the possibility of private sector participation in the manufacturing of the Tejas Mk2.

Initially, HAL planned to operate three production lines for the Tejas Mk1A, aiming to produce up to 24 jets each year. However, the recent addition of 97 Mk1A jets has pushed the production timeline out to 2031-32. This extension could result in a two-year delay before HAL can fully transition to Mk2 production, which was originally expected to commence in 2029.

While HAL intends to begin limited production of the Mk2 in 2029, full-scale output is not anticipated until mid-2035 due to current facility limitations. This timeline does not align with the IAF's urgency for quicker deliveries.

To meet this demand, the IAF is considering a private company that could set up a production line to manufacture at least 5-6 Tejas Mk2 jets annually. This initiative would help expedite deliveries while HAL ramps up its own production capabilities. The IAF is looking at a potential order for 120 Mk2 jets, with an additional 80-90 more jets planned, making private sector involvement attractive. The IAF estimates that approximately 40 jets could be outsourced, providing a significant opportunity for interested companies.

Conversations are ongoing with three companies that have shown interest in the 5th Generation Stealth Fighter Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, another indigenous fighter jet initiative. These discussions are focused on their potential role in operating a small production line for the Tejas Mk2 alongside their future involvement in the prestigious 5th Generation Stealth Fighter AMCA program.
