In a recent discussion with Suno Digital, former Commodore Sajid Mehmood Shehzad HI(M) of the Pakistani Navy emphasized that Indian aircraft carriers would be top targets for the Pakistani Navy in the event of a conflict with India. Shehzad stated that these formidable warships would be prioritized if they were to approach the coastal waters of Pakistan.

While acknowledging the difficulties associated with engaging aircraft carriers—often protected by robust carrier strike groups—Shehzad suggested that the Indian Navy might be reluctant to bring its carriers near the Pakistani coastline. This caution could lead the Indian Navy to maintain a safe distance for its aircraft carriers in the Arabian Sea, thus minimizing the risk of direct confrontation.

The significance of aircraft carriers in naval warfare is further highlighted by historical events, particularly the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. During this conflict, the Pakistani Navy deployed the submarine PSN Ghazi with the intent to target the Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. However, India had preemptively relocated the carrier to the Bay of Bengal to support operations against East Pakistan. This situation underscores the strategic importance of aircraft carriers and the measures navies will undertake to safeguard them.

Shehzad’s insights provide a window into the strategic mindset of the Pakistani Navy and its potential military strategies. While the specter of conflict between India and Pakistan remains a critical concern, the Pakistani Navy’s focus on targeting Indian aircraft carriers highlights the crucial role of naval power in ensuring regional security.
