Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated 75 new infrastructure projects by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worth Rs 2,236 crore today on October 12. These projects, including 22 roads, 51 bridges, and two others, span across 11 states and the Union Territories.

Of the 75 new projects, 19 are in Jammu and Kashmir, 11 in Ladakh, 18 in Arunachal Pradesh, nine in Uttarakhand, six in Sikkim, five in Himachal Pradesh, two each in West Bengal and Rajasthan and one each in Nagaland, Mizoram and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Singh launched the project from the Trishakti Corps headquarters in Sukna, West Bengal. Among the highlights was the Kupup-Sherathang Road in Sikkim, which connects the Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg to the Zuluk axis, enhancing connectivity in the region, according to the official statement issued by the Ministry of Defence.

“These projects are a testament to our commitment to bolstering border infrastructure and advancing socio-economic growth in remote areas,” Singh said during the event. He also stated that the projects would strengthen the country’s defence capabilities, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Developed India by 2047”.

With these projects, the BRO has completed 111 infrastructure projects in 2024, worth Rs 3,751 crore. This includes the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, inaugurated by PM Modi earlier.

Singh praised the BRO for completing these projects in difficult terrain and challenging weather. He emphasised that, unlike past governments, the PM Modi-led government prioritises border development for both strategic and socio-economic reasons. “We have built a vast network of roads, from villages to cities, leading to progress at an unprecedented pace,” he added.

He also highlighted the increased allocation of Rs 6,500 crore in the 2024-25 budget for BRO, asserting its role in strengthening both defence and development in border areas.
