Indian Navy seeks nod for Second Indigenous Aircraft Carrier, IAC-II

The Indian Navy is preparing to submit a proposal to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for the development of its second aircraft carrier, known as IAC-II. The Navy is seeking the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), which is the first step towards approval for this major procurement project.

With an estimated displacement of 45,000 tonnes and a projected cost of around Rs 40,000 crore, IAC-II is expected to be a powerful addition to India’s naval fleet. The state-owned Cochin Shipyard is set to build the carrier, with design modifications that will allow it to support unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations.

The Indian Navy has long advocated for a fleet of three aircraft carriers to effectively counter the growing naval capabilities of China and its increasing influence in the Indian Ocean region. At present, India operates two aircraft carriers: INS Vikramaditya, a Russian-built platform, and INS Vikrant, which was indigenously developed and built in India.

The development of IAC-II reflects India's ongoing efforts to bolster its naval strength and ensure a strong, enduring presence in the strategically important Indian Ocean. As the proposal progresses, the DAC will thoroughly assess the project, including its feasibility, costs, and alignment with the Navy’s long-term goals.
