The Indian Army is preparing to strengthen its presence in the difficult terrains of Ladakh by deploying the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand Attack Helicopter by 2025.

This decision is driven by the limitations of the Apache helicopters, which, while highly effective against armored targets in desert conditions, face challenges in maintaining full operational capabilities at high altitudes.

The LCH Prachand, developed domestically for high-altitude combat, is set to bridge this operational gap. Its inclusion in Army Aviation, which has mainly relied on utility helicopters, represents a significant upgrade in the Army’s offensive power. The first LCH Prachand squadron was stationed at Missamari, Assam, near the Line of Actual Control in November 2022, marking its initial deployment in the Eastern sector.

This move aligns with the Chief of Defence Staff’s analysis, which identified the armed forces' need for dedicated attack helicopters in high-altitude scenarios. A study conducted last year emphasized the need for 39 heavy attack helicopters to meet the Army's requirements.

To address this, the Defence Acquisition Council has approved the purchase of 156 LCH Prachand helicopters, with 90 designated for the Army and 66 for the Air Force. This order, valued at around ₹45,000 crore, complements the ongoing acquisition of 15 limited series production LCH Prachand helicopters.

Additionally, the Army operates 75 Rudra helicopters, weaponized versions of the Advanced Light Helicopter, further boosting its aerial combat capabilities. This multi-layered strategy highlights the Army’s dedication to enhancing its operational effectiveness across various environments.

The deployment of the LCH Prachand in Ladakh is expected to significantly improve the Army's combat preparedness in high-altitude regions, offering a robust response to potential threats and safeguarding the nation's security interests.
