India issues 1,700 km NOTAM warning for Possible Missile Test over Bay of Bengal
India has issued a new NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) warning, covering a range of 1,720 kilometers over the Bay of Bengal, for a potential missile test from September 25-30, 2024. This follows an earlier NOTAM issued on September 13, 2024, which specified a range of 1,645 kilometers. The modified range suggests that a significant missile test is imminent, but the specific missile remains unknown.
The extension of the range and the designation of a "Danger Zone" in the Bay of Bengal have fueled speculation about the type of missile being tested. One of the leading candidates is the Agni Prime missile, with an official range of 1,000-2,000 kilometers, which fits well within the parameters outlined in the NOTAM. Given that the range specified closely matches the Agni Prime's capabilities, there is a 90% likelihood that this missile will be tested. Agni Prime, an advanced variant of the Agni missile series, is known for its precision and improved technology, making it a key component of India's strategic arsenal.

However, it is also possible that the test could involve a different missile, potentially one that is still in development. One candidate could be the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM). Though its maximum range is believed to be around 1,500 kilometers, just below the 1,720 kilometers indicated in the NOTAM, it remains a plausible option, especially if DRDO is testing an enhanced version or variant of this missile.
The exact identity of the missile will only be confirmed post-launch. This uncertainty highlights India’s continued efforts to advance its missile technology, both in terms of strike capabilities and versatility. The test will mark another important step in India’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and maintain strategic deterrence in the region.
Until the missile is officially identified, speculation will continue, with Agni Prime and the LR-LACM being the most likely candidates. The test, if successful, will further enhance India's position in missile technology and defense readiness.
