As India and the United States move closer to finalizing a deal for the local production of 99 F-414 engines, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned aerospace company, is preparing to establish a new production facility.
HAL has already selected a suitable location and is drafting plans to produce at least two engines per month at peak capacity. The F-414 production line is set to begin operations in 2028, initially producing one engine per month, with output gradually increasing to two per month. This aligns with the anticipated production of 24 Tejas Mk2 fighter jets annually by 2030-31.
The F-414 engine is a crucial component of the Tejas Mk2 fighter, and its local manufacturing will boost India’s self-reliance in defense production. The agreement with GE Aerospace includes a Transfer of Technology (ToT) to HAL, enabling domestic production of these advanced engines.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has indicated a requirement for around 200 Tejas Mk2 jets by 2039-2040, which could drive an expansion of F-414 engine production. HAL has laid out plans to increase its annual engine production capacity to 30 units, accommodating a potential rise in demand for Tejas Mk2 aircraft.
The completion of the F-414 engine manufacturing agreement will be a significant achievement for India’s defense industry, enhancing self-sufficiency and fostering the development of advanced manufacturing capabilities.
