DRDO all set to test Air-Launched version of Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM) by Late 2024
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is gearing up for the first test of the air-launched version of the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM), which is currently in development. This missile is derived from the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM), formerly known as the Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile, and is being developed specifically for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The test is expected to take place by the end of this year, according to Dr. Samir V. Kamat, marking a major milestone in India’s self-reliant defense technology efforts.
The LR-LACM is a long-range, subsonic, all-weather cruise missile developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) under the DRDO. Capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads, the missile is a critical asset for India's defense forces. It can be deployed from multiple platforms, including land, sea, and air, demonstrating its flexibility in different combat environments, according to DRDO officials.
As of February 2023, DRDO had declared the successful completion of the Nirbhay cruise missile’s development phase after conducting six successful test trials. These trials showed the missile's precision with a single-shot kill probability exceeding 90%, affirming its effectiveness in precision targeting.
The upcoming test for the Indian Air Force will be a pivotal moment in operationalizing the Nirbhay/ITCM/LR-LACM missile system. It is expected to significantly strengthen India’s long-range strike capabilities and improve its regional strategic deterrence, according to Dr. Kamat. The missile is expected to have a range of over 1,000 kilometers.
Additionally, DRDO is developing multiple versions of the Nirbhay or ITCM missile, including air-launched and submarine-launched variants. The missile's design allows for adaptability, enabling it to carry different types of payloads and complete various mission objectives. A ship-launched variant is also undergoing developmental trials, further expanding its operational utility, according to the DRDO Chief.
