The DRDO has started work on the fabrication of the second interceptor missile of the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Phase-II program known as AD-2 or Air Defense-2 that can intercept Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) with a range between 3,000 to 5,500 kilometers.

DRDO has recently tested the first interceptor missile AD-1 of the Phase-2 of the BMD and the test was a grand success. AD-1 is designed to intercept missiles with ranges upto 2,200km.

The AD-2 Interceptor will start trials in late 2023 and BMD Phase 2 will be validated and ready by 2025 including new long-range radar systems with a scanning capability of over 1,500 kilometers.

BMD Phase-2 interceptors AD-1 and AD-2 can intercept Chinese and Pakistani ballistic missiles having ranges upto 5,500km and even with MiRV warheads.

DRDO has already started deploying Phase-1 of the BMD where there are two more missiles namely PDV (Prithvi Defense Vehicle) for missiles with ranges upto 5,000km and AAD (Advanced Air Defense) for missiles with ranges upto 2,000km.

Together BMD Phase-1 and Phase-2 interceptors will create an umbrella of protection over India’s airspace from Chinese and Pakistani ballistic missiles.
