A High ranking official has said that the Astra Mk 1 BVRAAM missile is undergoing carriage trials on board the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft and the trials is progressing well with satisfactory results and the indigenous 110 kilometers range BVRAAM missile will definitely be fired from the Tejas aircraft in 2022.
The advantage of an indigenous air-to-air missile is that none of the adversaries will be aware of its characteristics, capabilities and limitations and when needed it can also be improved or upgraded in-house.
India has already briefed friendly countries on the Astra Mark 1 as India aims to capture a niche market for alternative suppliers of Russian air-to-air missiles.
