After the certification of the 46 kilonewton dry Kaveri engine is completed by 2026, the DRDO is planning to develop an uprated core that will generate 60 kilonewton dry thrust which will be equipped with the new afterburner section that is currently under development to generate a maximum thrust of 90 kilonewton that will be ideal to replace the 84 kilonewton thrust class F-404 engine on the Tejas Mk 1A Fleet when they are due to engine change in mid-2035.
India is in advance level of talks with French jet engine maker Safran for the development of a new 120 kilonewton-class Hybrid engine for the AMCA program but this engine won't make it to the older Tejas Mk 1A type due to which talks on an uprated Kaveri engine are taking place.
