Two of the DRDO's
labs Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) and Naval Science &
Technological Laboratory (NSTL) along with state-owned shipbuilder Mazgaon Dock
Limited (MDL) have started a project to modify a Kilo-class submarine of the Indian
Navy.
This submarine will be converted into test bed for testing of all indigenous technologies including incorporation of Lithium-ion batteries, DRDO Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system and integration of Underwater Autonomous vehicles.
This test bed will pave the way for the development of indigenous submarine design under Project-76 (P-76) which will result in 12 indigenous submarines to replace Type 209 Sishumar class and Kilo-class submarines.
