Four militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Badigam area of Shopian on Thursday. The identity of the militants is being ascertained, police said, adding that more details about their affiliations would be given later.

Earlier, J&K police and the Army launched a cordon and search operation in Badigam. As they moved in, they were fired upon by hiding militants. The police retaliated triggering off a gunfight, following which four militants were killed, police said.

IGP Kashmir later said that the slain terrorists were active in Shopian and adjacent areas of Pulwama. “They were involved in 6 terror crimes, including attacks on outside labourers. Hunt for their associates like Aijaz of Pulwama is on and they will be neutralised soon," the police officer added.

In a related incident, two Army soldiers were killed and as many injured when the vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident in Shopian. The soldiers were on their way to the encounter site when the accident occurred.

Police said the Tata Sumo ferrying the soldiers skidded off the road in the Kanipora area. “In the incident, four troopers received injuries, who were shifted to district hospital, Shopian for treatment. Two of them succumbed on the way to hospital while others are undergoing treatment at the district hospital," they said.
