HAL Tejas to become the First Light fighter in the World with dedicated Electronic warfare variant
Indian Air Force Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas

What HAL and DRDO will be doing with the Tejas EW, is that they will be pioneering a new category of EW Aircrafts – The Lightweight Category. Be it the Gripen-C, Italian M-346, Russian Yak-130, S Korean FA-50, British Hawk-200, or Chinese JF-17 or JL-10 – None of these Light combat aircrafts have a dedicated EW variant yet in service. Tejas EW will enable even countries with tight budgets afford a modern electronic warfare aircraft to deter against larger and better armed adversaries.

As per available information, ADE is planning to incorporate 3 Low-Drag GaN ASPJ Pods on the Tejas along with the GaAs UEWS Internal Suite. The UEWS has a peak power of around 30 Watts. The ASPJ will have a peak power of around 3.75 kW, 3 of them working in tandem making it 11.25 kW. So all of them create a Combined EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) of around 11.28 kW.

Further, Deep integration of the Uttam AESA Radar with the Tejas’s EW System will enable it to enact as a jammer on its own & add another 7.4 kW of power. When current GaAs Uttam and UEWS will be swapped with GaN variants of the same in near future, then they would be able to generate a Jamming-power of 18.56 kW.

Together, GaN Uttam, ASPJ Mk-2 & GaN UEWS will be churning a Combined EIRP of 32.10 kW compared to the earlier 11.28 kW of Tejas EW & 30 kW of the current E/A-18G Growler. Such a level of Jamming-power might not be able to cloak a Strike Package of HO Aircrafts like the Su-30 MKI from LR-SAMs designed for 4th Gen Aircraft like the S-400, but would certainly be able to do so for a Strike Package of MO/LO Aircrafts such as the Tejas Mk-1A, MWF, Mirage or Rafale – Which themselves would be carrying 1 SPJ of their own. 2 Rudram-1 Anti-Radiation Missiles with a range of 250 Km planned to be carried by each Tejas EW would be the final icing on the cake.
