In response to Request for Information (RFI) for the MGS was floated by the Indian Army in April last year to identify probable Indian vendors for the manufacture of the 155mm/ 52 caliber MGS under the Buy (Indian-IDDM), Buy (Indian) or Buy & Make (Indian) clauses. Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) 155 mm/52 caliber howitzer on 8×8 truck bed has been offered by DRDO along with its Private sector partners in the program.
Indian Army has a requirement of 814 MGS and it was accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AON) by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in September 2011, but since then little progress has been made. RFI states that 155 mm/ 52 Calibre Mounted Gun System will be employed in plains, mountains, high altitude areas, semi-desert, and desert terrain along the Northern and Western Borders of the country for the execution of Artillery tasks.
Indian Army has asked for an Inertial Navigation System-based sight system with the capability to orient and fixes the location of the Gun System. The FCS should also have the capability to provide day and night direct and indirect firing and FCS should be compatible with Project SHAKTI.
ATAGS based MGS will have a mass of 34-35 tons (including Truck) as per information provided to idrw.org since the Indian Army has not specified weight limitation in its RFI. At this point in time, there is no clarity when DRDO plans to build an ATAGS based on MGS for trials and demonstration purposes.
Army has asked for a minimum of 50% Indigenous Content (IC) 155 mm / 52 Calibre Mounted Gun System that received offers from 3 private sector companies in collaboration with International vendor, while 52 calibers 155 mm variant of the Dhanush Howitzer Based MGS has been developed by the Jabalpur-based Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) is the second Indigenous gun that is the race and has completed internal trials and has been offered to Army for user trials.
