Amid brewing debate over the recent security breach faced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Punjab, a Khalistani outfit has issued a direct threat to the PM. The group has said that they will not let him unfurl the tricolour on Republic Day, announcing a reward of Rs 1 million for anyone who makes this happen.

According to details accessed by Times Now, the threat has been issued by a banned outfit called Sikhs for Justice. The project dubbed ‘Block PM Modi, Block Tiranga’ is believed to have an announced budget of Rs 1 million.  The development also holds echoes of the disrupted Republic Day celebrations in Delhi last year. Following the protests, reports quoting an FIR lodged by the Delhi police had suggested that the Sikhs for Justice group issued a Rs 25 lakh bounty, calling for secessionist flags to be hoisted at the Red Fort.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab was cut short after he was stranded on a flyover for 20 minutes due to a blockade by protesters. He had been slated to attend an event at a martyrs’ memorial at Hussainiwala and a rally in Ferozepur. Following the incident, Modi’s convoy had decided to return, sparking allegations and counter-allegations from various political parties. The Supreme Court has constituted a panel to probe the entire incident.

The BJP has alleged that the Congress government in Punjab deliberately ignored the security threat to the Prime Minister. ” The question this expose begets who in the Congress-led government in Punjab continued to deliberately ignore these threats to the PM’s security?” asked Union Minister Smriti Irani during a press conference today.

The Congress meanwhile has suggested that the decision to cut short the prime minister’s trip was caused by the alleged thin attendance at his scheduled rally. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has insisted that there was no threat to Modi.
