Senior Congress leader Manish Tewari on Friday debunked Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s claim that there was no threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security when his cavalcade stopped for 20 minutes on a flyover in Ferozepur.

While speaking to media, Tewari said that as far as the security of the Prime Minister is concerned, it cannot be compared with anyone else’s security. “Where his convoy was stopped, it is only 10 km away from the Indo-Pak border. Heavy artillery is usually deployed by Pakistan at the border,” said the Congress leader.

Pointing to the face that PM Modi was in Pakistan’s firing range, he said, “Our guns are also stationed at the border. The range of the artillery is 35-36 km or more. So, comparing the Prime Minister of the country with someone else’s security is not appropriate in my conscience.”

He, however, went on to assert that there was “no” lapse in PM’s security and he was stopped on a flyover for 20 minutes because there was a protest going on.

Tewari’s reaction has come a day after Punjab CM Channi rejected the claims that there was a threat to PM Modi’s security in Ferozepur.

PM Modi had to cut short his Punjab visit on Wednesday after a group of protestors blocked the route his cavalcade had taken from the airport.

The BJP has accused Congress of conspiring to physically harm the prime minister. The Punjab government has insisted that there was no security lapse but has ordered a probe.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has also started a probe into the security lapse.
