Five terrorists of the active militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let) and Jaish-e-Mohammed(JeM) were killed overnight in two separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam and Pulwama districts, police said on Sunday. Kashmir’s inspector general of police Vijay Kumar said that top JeM commander Zahid Wani and a Pakistani terrorist were among those militants killed by security forces in the last 12 hours.

Zahid Wani was involved in the Letpura IED incident in which more then 40 CRPF cadres had died on 14 February 2019. Zahid was neutralised along with a Pakistani terrorist identified as Wahid Ahmed Rishi and two local cadres– Kafeel alias Chhota Pakistani JeM and Inayatullah Mir.

“We were looking for JeM commander Zahid Wani for a long time. On receiving inputs yesterday (Saturday), we launched a search operation followed by an encounter in which Wani and 3 others, including Pakistani terrorist Kafil, were neutralised, in Pulwama,” DGP Dilbag Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.

He added, “In another operation, a local terrorist was killed in Budgam. He worked with LeT and TRF.”

On Saturday evening, Kashmir Zone Police said that an encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in the Naira area of Pulwama.

Acting on specific input about the presence of militants in the Naira area of Pulwama in south Kashmir, security forces had launched a cordon and search operation there.

While four terrorists were killed in the encounter in the Naira area of Pulwama, in south Kashmir, one ultra was killed in Chrar-i-Sharief area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, a police official said.

Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition, including an AK 56 rifle, were recovered from the site.
