Indian Defence Ministry is planning to cancel many Request for Information (RFI), Request for Information (RFI), Request for Proposal (RFP) and Expression of Interest (EoI) floated over the last few years in response to stop the further import of defence equipment as now the government plans to give first preference would be given to the acquisition of Indian Developed Designed and Manufactured (IDDM) products.

Some of the projects that will be shelved are procurement of 5000 Igla-S Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) Missile Systems from Russia but Army will take deliveries of contracted orders for a small number of Igla-S systems from Russia under emergency procurement, but the preference will be given to the DRDO developed Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) that is under development and five units are presently under fabrication to be used for its developmental trials soon.

Plans to locally build 200 Russian Kamov Ka-226T light helicopters in India were already dropped and now proposals to procure 60 under emergency procurement deal are also to be dropped. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) developed LUH (Light Utility Helicopter) will replace nearly 400 Cheetah and Chetak light helicopters for which HAL has agreed to bump its production capacity to over 50 helicopters per year.

Indian Army had issued Request For Information (RFI) for the procurement of 350 light tanks weighing less than 25 tons last year that could have favored Russia’s 2S25 Sprut-SD Light tank but this to will be canceled as Larsen & Toubro along with CVRDE proposed light tank proposal has been accepted by the Indian Army and fabrication of the prototype already is underway based on the chassis designs of the Future Main Battle Tank (FMBT) that CVRDE had proposed to replace T-72 fleet.

Request for Information (RFI) to procure over 1,700 Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) by the Indian Army might not be canceled but will be pursued through the Strategic Partnership (SP) route and the induction of which is expected to be completed by 2030. Indian companies including Tata Motors, Reliance Defence and Engineering Limited, Mahindra Group, Bharat Forge, Punj Lloyd, Tata Power SED, Titagarh Wagons, and Tractors India had expressed interest in forming a joint venture with the OEMs, but Defence Ministry likely will prefer domestic design instead of relying on Original Equipment Manufacturers of foreign countries as RFI requires 40 percent indigenous content.
