Harsh Vardhan Thakur, Experimental Test Pilot with the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on his Twitter account has tweeted what possibly could be the first image of Unmanned Kiran MkII intermediate jet-powered trainer aircraft being converted into a CATS OMCA (Optionally-manned combat aircraft) that HAL has been developing with Bangalore based start-up.
Kiran MkII OMCA seems to be experimented with Autonomous Take-Off and Landing (ATOL) equipment for a while now and GoPro Pic shared by the Thakur of the cockpit shows that the aircraft already has undertaken a few flight trials in Unmanned configuration.
HAL with Bengaluru-based startup, Newspace Research, and Technologies plans to convert now obsolete Kiran MkII, Mig-21, and Mig-27 fighter jets to be used as a decoy to overwhelm adversary air defenses by their sheer numbers or as a rudimentary unmanned combat aircraft to draw out Air defense system positioning of the enemy.
