Santoshi, wife of Late Colonel Santosh Babu, on Tuesday accepted the Maha Vir Chakra (posthomous) accorded to her husband by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. Late Colonel Santosh Babu was the Commanding Officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment. He was among the Indian soldiers who died during the clashes with Chinese troops in Galwan last year.
India Today’s Executive Editor Shiv Aroor spoke to Santoshi to find out how she dealt with the situation and what it was like to have the solidarity and admiration of the entire nation.
Q) Your sentiments and thoughts on a day you received the Maha Vir Chakra from the President?
It’s a very proud moment for me and my family. His sacrifice has given me more strength to carry on with life.
Q) What has the last year been for you and your family? How did you cope with the loss?
We have not forgotten him. He may not be with us physically, but his memories, thoughts and guidance are always with us. We have always been taught that no matter what happens, we must remember that my husband has made a selfless sacrifice for the country. He has done exemplary service to the nation. Whenever I feel sad, I put forward these thoughts and cope with the grief.
Q) After Galwan, the entire nation was with you. What is it like having the solidarity and admiration of the entire nation?
It gives me goosebumbs when people talk about my husband’s service to the nation. I feel proud when people say Col Santosh Babu is a great person. All the praises about my husband clouds my sadness and I feel much better.
Q) What is your message for India’s men and women, who have been inspired by Col Santosh Babu, to join the military?
It’s a great opportunity to serve the nation. Not everyone gets the opportunity to work for the nation in the defence forces specifically.
